Sorry folks, Chingis Khaaan is booted for spamming, and I have set membership back to moderated for a while. Give it a few weeks and we'll go back to open membership, but spamming will simply not be tolerated.
Sorry for the inconvenience...

Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Sun, April 26, 2009 - 2:46 PMSo, you get 1 spammer and close down the membership?
Over-react much? -

Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Sun, April 26, 2009 - 2:47 PMBut while you are at it, what about the wool-coop guy? -

Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Sun, April 26, 2009 - 3:47 PMI'll second that. Boot em all.

Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Sun, April 26, 2009 - 7:52 PMHmm, tough call. I seriously considered the wool co-op guy as well, but there is a difference that has saved him. Chingis Khaan got booted for posting an advert for their shop, then responding to just about every new thread, no matter what the topic, with another advert for their shop, often multiple times in the same thread. The wool co-op guy posts notices about his sales, one time each, clearly saying that the thread is an advert, not commenting in anyone else's posts, and only posting each announcement a single time. These seem like respectful reasonable use in that reading the subject line shows it to be an advert that one need not open if they don't want to. All in all, while he's advertising here, his advertising is on topic, and avoidable.
All that having been said, I will be happy to consider asking him to limit his efforts or stop them entirely if there is enough of an uproar. I'll start a new thread to discuss it. This guy's behaviour is not to me egregious enough to merit booting, but if the will of the majority deems it so, I will act on that will.
See you in the new thread. :-)

Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Sun, April 26, 2009 - 7:43 PMNo, as was mentioned earlier, I tend to be very hands off, figuring we're all adults here. When the membership raises the alarm, I look at the problem, see if it's fixable with a wrist slap (usually private emails), and if so that's the result. In cases where people are being jerks and resistant to more subtle means, they get the boot. In the last several years that I've been moderator, I've had to do this three times. The first time I did it, both parties rejoined the list immediately and picked up where they left off. After that I started to moderate membership after flare-ups. Consider it a 30-day enforced stay in the penalty box. Also, while membership is moderated, I review my inbox daily to check for membership requests. Ones that come from established (older than 30 days, have a few connections, a few tribes subscribed to, a few pictures, that sort of stuff) Tribe accounts get automatically admitted. Brand new accounts get to sit around a while, to avoid socket-puppets (which we've also had some trouble with).
So, noticing that you've been here a very short time, allow me to say welcome. Also allow me to say you don't know me, and as a new-comer to this tribe you haven't seen the crap I've had to put up with, so I don't really think you have the background yet to push about me over-reacting, or reacting consistently with what has gone on before, and if I'm acting fairly. All things being equal, I'd rather NEVER EVER have to act as moderator here. I'd prefer if everyone behaved virtuously, treated each other with respect, and observed etiquette. As I've only really had to apply the boot three times, I think we as a community are doing very well. I imagine that may have something to do with our collective manners, and the collective knowledge that I put up with just about zero bullshit. Respectful disagreement is fantastic. Politely empassioned discourse is likewise fantastic. Name-calling, insults, threats of real-world violence, and other similar acts disregarding civilized interactions get dealt with immediately and as finally as I can make them here.
Moderate your tribes how you wish. Here I mandate peace and politeness. Also, please note that I NEVER get involved as moderator without someone messaging me privately to alert me to an issue. I'm not a capricious jerk, and I don't act unrequested. I AM a heavy-handed jerk, but a fair one.
As I said, all things being equal, I'd like to sit here at my desk knowing that about 1700 SCA members and interested parties are discussing things happily and like Lords and Ladies. I don't care if the topics are period, I don't care if a single individual is advertising an item or service as long as they're not bombarding every post with their listings, I don't care if a merchant is advertising Help Wanteds for their shop at Pennsic. I care only that we are treating each other courteously and honorably.

Mon, April 27, 2009 - 3:13 AMI wonder how hotdog stands would do at a public execution?
But on topic. Thanks for your service Coach. -

Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 9:57 AMFor the record, I agree with booting the mongolian person if they were spamming so much, and did not listen to requests to stop.
As for closing the membership down, I do not like this action.
I have found myself less likely to join any tribe that is private or requires some kind of "permission" to join.
I suspect I am not the only one.
I feel this will possibly limit both the desire to join and the input of new and interesting people.

Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 2:19 PMFear not, it's only temporary. Like I said, this step isn't something I just do, but a step necessary to prevent the booted from just coming right back and picking up where they left off.

Fri, May 22, 2009 - 2:52 PMwe after being on the receiving end of a boot without good cause... I tend to be against blocking as well. Its amazing how one side got looked at and I was the heavy... because of the flock that joined to peck me down... felt like a dying chicken... only to be totally rectified in real life...but not here... nnooooooo.
and agree with pewter..Mead and turkey legs for exectutions...

Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 6:59 AMAs I recall, you weren't booted "without good cause", I, the moderator, reviewed all the related posts, saw who was stirring the trouble, and put you in time-out. I'd rather not rehash the entire episode, as you will not come out looking good, just let the past be the past, and move forward. -

yes I was, your opinion on the posts must have been jaded... I was attacked the most when I was only defending the shop I worked for. I not only worked for the shop once again but received a promotion.
I'd rather not rehash the entire episode, as you will not come out looking good, just let the past be the past, and move forward.
need a guillotine?
sorry guess i shall get booted again. lol -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Spammer booted, posts deleted
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 12:31 PMNope, not so much. No need to boot for something this minor. You're well aware of the levels you've risen to in the past that have netted the boot. Keep things civil and you're free to whatever opinion you want. I don't really care.

Mon, September 14, 2009 - 11:35 AMXavier, you seem to like stirring worms, but you are unwilling to accept them as your dinner.
Were you to place your advertisement again, I would not consider purchasing just because you have not accepted responsibility for your actions, and probably do not do that in your life either.
You know that you are better than the rest of the membership of this list and have shown that you are more than willing to let us know that.
Poor deluded child, I pity you. -

Wed, September 16, 2009 - 7:46 PMGeeze.
You know what's cool about the internet? Anyone can start their own boards. If you don't like this one, I'm sure you're welcome to do just that.
Everyone's a guest here. It's embarassing to watch people act like tools in someone else's house.
