I was asked in another post if, having booted Chingis Khaan for spamming the list, I might also boot "the wool co-op guy". I mentioned my reluctance, but promised to ask the membership, and I assure you all I will abide by the will of the masses.
The case against Chingis was that he joined on 4-23, and by 4-26 had spammed the hell out of the list, posting an advert, then spamming every new thread with his advert, often posting the advert multiple times in each thread. I got some emailed complaints, and he got the boot.
The case against Tristan is a bit less obvious, but I mention it to give some comparison. In 7-8 weeks, there have been two (2) ads posted, one for the Linen Co-op on 3-6-09 and one for the Wool Co-op on 4-24-09. The subject lines made it clear that they were adverts, the content is polite, even apologetic, and they seem to be on topic. Personally I think this is not so different from someone posting that they have a Panther Pavilion for sale, nor do I find two posts in 7 weeks to be particularly objectionable, but, as promised, please let me know if you think Tristan should get the boot.
All things being equal, I don't mind seeing event announcements, or ads for things for sale like tents or garb or stuff of definite interest to the subscribers here as long as the volume by the individual posters is low. 30+ messages in three days is clearly excessive. Is one per month excessive? Is it that we're ok with individuals selling single things, but against businesses marketing to us? Is it that we don't want to see any ads at all? Please let me know how you feel, in that these questions aren't rhetorical, I truly do not yet have my mind made up, nor do I presume to know how you the subscribers feel. Please keep the conversation polite, though.
Thanks in advance for your input!

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 5:51 AMI'm fairly new but, for me ads for things don't bug me when I can avoid them. It would be better if they were in listings. But every once in awhile it's nice to know if there's something going on like that. The wool co-op seemed more like an event than an ad. And he did post it by itself. If I saw a sale coming up or knew of something that might be of an interest to the board like this I might post it too. If it's easy to avoid and isn't tagged onto everything I say it's fine.

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 6:47 AMI lurk a lot of this list but very seldom post but for what its worth, I think the ads are avoidable and not intrusive or annoying so I say it's fine as is.

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 8:38 AMI am fine with Tristan's ads. They supply a service that is on topic for the list. They are only about 4 or 5 times a year and he is not spamming other threads with his ad and you know from the topic what he is about.

Mon, April 27, 2009 - 2:11 PMI think what we're forgetting to ask here is how do the sheep feel about all this? -

Re: *holds thumb up*
Tue, April 28, 2009 - 8:29 AMI also lurk a lot, but I always assumed ads were to be posted in the listings section. I am a Merchant btw, and wouldn't post in the Topics unless knowing it's ok. That said, it's nice to see an occaisional ad in Topics since i rarely look at the Listings ;-)
Too much tho and it gets annoying. -

Re: *holds thumb up*
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 7:58 AMSounds like the consensus is an occasional advert, denoted as such in the subject, and for SCA related products or services is acceptible to the tribe. I look forward to reading your next listing!

Tue, April 28, 2009 - 9:19 AMTristan does not mass spam, and he warns you by his thread title. He is polite about it and should stay. -

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Tue, April 28, 2009 - 9:37 AMHonestly, I think it's a little weird to kick out anyone who is advertising anything relevant. It seems like the general consensus is that everyone is okay with Tristan, but what about all the countless other people who peddle their wares on here? I don't see a problem with any of it--even the guy who was only on here a few days--if what he was selling was relevant, then what's the problem? -

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Tue, April 28, 2009 - 12:41 PMThe problem was that he sent the same message to multiple discussions, and several times to each of them. -

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Tue, April 28, 2009 - 6:22 PMHere here!
If the mongolian guy had posted in his own thread, once, I wouldn't have had a problem, even though it still is spamming.

My sentiments exactly. Tristan also is a regular merchant that we probably all have seen and bought from at several wars.

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 6:37 AMIt was the feeling that this tribe had been spammed by an automated bot that was really irritating. Like a telemarketer that keeps calling. Someone who occasionally posts sales ads, but answers questions and is an actual person doesn't bother me in the same way.

Wed, April 29, 2009 - 7:34 AMI do not feel bothered by a couple of posts...

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 7:51 AMI've been off for an eternity, however I will vote anyway.
It sounds like wool-boy is fine.
I vote keep 'im.

Re: Booting "the wool co-op guy"?
Fri, May 1, 2009 - 2:44 AMThere's a real difference between being a part of a community, and using a group of people.
I think that Tristan wanted to be a part of the community.
One thing that is not in your post, coach, is how many posts Tristan made that weren't ads.
If the answer is Zero, that means something.
