Hi everyone, I'm new to this tribe but have been a history geek most of my life. I'm interested in taking up the longbow. I've checked all over the web and there are no groups in my area (2 1/2 hours to St. Louis from here).
Anyone here have any tips, advice or recommendation for a noob?

Re: Longbow Advice?
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 8:18 PMA good arm guard. Long bows bite and if you don't have a guard you will tend to hold your arm bent away from the string which in turn will cause bad habits in your shooting. you can learn to shoot with out the arm guard but don't start that way. -

Fri, August 28, 2009 - 6:56 AMThanks for the advice. The bow came yesterday and I just couldn't wait to try it out. I learned that string slap hurts and that it hurts more the next day. LOL. I have a makeshift arm guard for now. I've done a lot of leatherwork in my time so I'll probably just make one. My daughter thought it was so cool now she wants one too. This is gonna be fun. -

Re: Longbow Advice?
Fri, August 28, 2009 - 9:48 AMI practiced a little this morning and the makeshift bracer I have worked just fine and the bruise didn't bother me at all. But I will be more careful in the future.

Sat, August 29, 2009 - 10:34 PMI also suggest getting a finger guard of some sort, unless you have good calluses. My fingertips hurt my first afternoon I did my practice before I was able to buy one. Still need to buy the bow and arrow set, but I am picky and will wait for the right one.
