You know, I've wondered about that as well. An organization as big as this and no place to go chew the fat?

I briefly thought about setting up a chat somewhere (I'm sure there must be a million free chat hosting services out there) and just posting an invitation here, but it's so hard to keep something like that going. See the SCA Forums for an example (www.sca-forums.com/phpBB2/index.php). That forum appears to have died rather quickly even after being announced on SCA Today.

If there is some thriving group chatting out there I'd love to know, too. Because Tribe is wonderful and all, but some days you just want to go someplace and "talk" to people in real time.

there aren't too many free chat room setups out there that I know of, and a chat room eats a LOT of bandwidth, is why most hosting companies will not allow them. I can see if my provider will allow me to put one up on the alehouse site (which also gives me momentum to revamp the site) and look into what's out there in scripts

Meebo ( www.meebo.com ) might also be a good choice because it allows you to sign in with whatever your current IM screenname is. (AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, etc.) You wouldn't have to create a new screenname and password if you didn't want to. Someone could create an SCA Meebo room and not have to host it.

I've used Meebo for my online biology class, but it was strange. You had to log into meebo, you couldn't say log into YIM and expect others on Meebo to see you. But that was just for IMing not for chatting so I'm not sure how that would work.

Apparently there is an SCA channel on undernet(www.undernet.org).

Indeed there is. I don't spend tons of time on IRC, but I've been to the Undernet SCA chat, and it's pretty good. I wouldn't mind seeing more familiar people from here over there. :-)

It took me a little while but I found it at irc://undernet/sca

Had to download the ChatZilla Firefox extension though. It's been forever since I used IRC.

And they've got the heads-up over there now and know some people may show up from Tribe.net. The official word is WELCOME!! :)

It's been a while since I used IRC (Internet Relay Chat) but here's how I did it:

I installed the Chatzilla extension for Firefox here: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fi.../addon/16

Then in Firefox I clicked "Tools", then "Chatzilla".

That opens up a new window and at the bottom there are several different links to severs listed. I clicked on "undernet". Then I clicked on "Tools", then "Join Channel" and searched for "sca" in the box that popped up.

I hope that made some kind of sense! lol

Chatzilla also comes preinstalled as part of Mozilla's SeaMonkey browser. Note that Firefox and SeaMonkey are both free browsers. I've used Firefox, and like it. I now use SeaMonkey, and love it.

For those who are using Internet Explorer or another browser and don't want to change, KVIRC is an IRC chat client that seems to work well. You can find it here: www.kvirc.net/

My bad, that should have read, "Then I clicked on "IRC", then "Join Channel" and searched for "sca" in the box that popped up."

OR, you can type: /join #sca and press enter.

(What I wouldn't give to be able to edit posts. :-p )

As founder and manager of the #SCA chat on Undernet, I wish to thank all those here who have brought the Tribe to my attention, and for alerting this tribe of my chat channel.
We have been chatting on Undernet for over a decade, bigger and busy and smaller and quiet, but a hand full of us have hung in there because there hasn't been a stable IRC chat, or any other chat we could find, anywhere. Over the years we have linker up to 10 IRC networks together so more people could could find and chat in SCA through IRC. At one point we had an average of 400+ people dropping in to chat each month. We now average around 25 in a month. Like I said, we have been big and also small, but we have always been.
If you would like a better idea of when we chat, days of the week, times of day best to find someone to talk with, just check out: www.silver-channel.com/stats We have forums, photo gallery and web site at www.silver-channel.com
We've considered ourselves a 'Household' for those unable to play actively with their local group due to there not being a group close, or, in my personal case, due to health issues that keeps one from being active as much as I'd like. Everyone is welcome to come chat.
I anxiously look forward to chatting with you wonderful people.

I guess it was always there, I just didn't think about it until later, I have asked it be updated though. www.silver-channel.com/irchelp.php has all the info you have been looking nfor, and all the info I should have remembered to tell others about.
Sometimes there is more going on around me then i am aware of, and unless I lift my head up and look at the person sitting next to me, I will remain in my own limited little world.

I think we all do that, a lot. I know I do.

Good to see you around these parts again. Sorry I bailed out so precipitously last night. The sleepies caught me.

And just what did the "sleepies" do when they caught you?

Seems I should log onto Tribe, while using Firefox...makes the downloads for it alot easier.

        ;-)
