I'm making a blue linen bliaut with multicolored trim at the neck and biceps. I only had enough trim to do that much, and now I'm trying to
figure out the best material to make the ceinture or belt out of. Should I use a length of a different wide trim, or make it from a solid fabric, or something else? Any trim I use won't match the trim that I've used on the bliaut itself, but the idea of a solid color belt doesn't really seem right to me. Or am I off base on that?
Any opinions or suggestions? I'm kind of in a time crunch, by the way. Ideally, I'd like to wear this bliaut to my Barony's Revel this Wednesday, and also take it to Baron Wars in early May.

Re: Garb help?
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 9:59 AMMake it reversible. Which for a long rectangle, is VERY easy. And get trim that isn't as fancy, and is good complementary colors. And then you don't have to choose between the 2.
Thou shalt post pictures. -

Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:04 AMHeheh, yes, I'll post pictures. Give me a few minutes to find my digital camera (oooh, new camera... there's something I want before Pennsic) and I'll put up a picture of the bliaut in its current state, so the trim is visible, which may help with my brainstorming. The getting of trim before Wednesday may be probematic, though I do have one or two possible options. Watch this space. ;-) -

Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:38 AMHere is a photo of the bliaut in progress. You can see the nice non-metallic trim I've used on the neckline and around the biceps.

And here are the other wide trims currently in my trim basket. All three were earmarked for other projects, but I can buy more if I use one for the belt. Additionally, the Tracery trims are intended for use on the neckline and sleeves of two fancier bliauts for Court (I'm making a complimentary-colors pair for my lord and myself) so if I make a belt from one or both of them, then it will also be useful with the Court garb.

So.... what do you think?

Re: Garb help?
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:03 AMmake a band of black for the belt and then add a guard at the hem of the same, that way it won't look "scabbed-on" and will have visual purpose.....and it will look snazzier since black will offset your colors -

Re: Garb help?
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 2:43 PMHmmm, I am not really sure if any of those trims match the one on the dress. But my vote is rather for a golden-rod color. The trim seems mostly red from afar, the dress is blue, thusly, a set of primary colors. Then you won't need to add a guard. And you can still make the belt reversible simply so that the other side matches another of your bliauts, even if it doesn't match this one, and you will not have to pack so many tangleable cloth belts.
Have you even considered shopping www.revivalclothing.com/ ?
They're website doesn't properly convey how awesome their stuff is. They have a store at Pennsic; seeing the stuff in person, it's fabulous. -

Re: Garb help?
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 2:49 PMThe trim on the dress is a combination of red, yellow, blue, green and black, in roughly equal amounts. I haven't got any golden-rod colored wide trim, and ordering some would probably cause it to come in after Wednesday, but I want to wear this on Wednesday night. Are you talking about a solid color, like material I could just run up to Joann Fabrics and buy?
I tend not to buy ready made garb because I'd rather make my own, it's usually cheaper to make my own, and I'm a rather odd combination of sizes in different parts of my figure, so making my own stuff is pretty much the only way to have it actually fit me. Back when I was more or less a perfect size 8 it was a different story, of course... *sigh*... -

Re: Garb help?
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 3:06 PMThat's why i said mostly red from a-far.
I was talking solid fabric from Joann's. Just an1/8 or 1/4 yd. Broadcloth.
I tend not to buy either, for the same reason. But their stuff fit like a glove, I was very happy with it. I had just already spent all my moneys.
