Hi! I've been looking online for a few days now to find information and patterns for breast-feeding friendly garb. I've found some, but have found that no one seems to have either patterns or a merchant who would sell them.
SO - I've been making alterations of my own to garb, and at the last event, I got LOTS of comments from women who wanted to know where I'd gotten them... Now, I am asking the following question to those who may be interested:
If either easy-to-use patterns or pre-sewn garments were available for purchase, that were nursing-friendly, would you be interested in purchasing them?
Depending on the response, I'm seriously considering making both and offering them for sale through the SCA...
Thanks for any feedback!

Re: Period Breastfeeding garb - a question...
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 12:23 AMI think it depends on the time period in question. As an example, I know of an Elizabethan pattern set that has info on making it into a maternity & breast feeding friendly outfit. I usually recommend that set to anyone who does that time period and asks.
But I will admit, I have had my children and will not be having any more, so your question is best for those younger ladies who would be interested in what you are offering. I do have a question for you... how is the garments you have planned "breast-feeding friendly" different from "everyday" period garments of the middle ages-renaissance? I have known a number of ladies who could breast feed just fine in their regular period garments, with a few basic mods, and wondering if you are offering something substantially different? To be blunt, some ladies have no problem unlacing the front of their gowns and giving their baby access. Are you offering something more modest? What makes the garments you are planning to offer different? -

Re: Period Breastfeeding garb - a question...
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 5:16 AMThat is kind of what I was thinking. There are so many pictures of Madonna and child in a cotehardie where the front of her gown is just undone, what would be different about nursing clothes? And would one really want to make a whole different set of garb you can't use in a couple months-year? -

Re: Period Breastfeeding garb - a question...
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 2:19 PMThese are actually both really good questions, and they are just what I need to try and make this a workable venture.
You are correct - much of the paintings show specific clothing where the gowns are simply let down or pulled down. Others show slits that sew up or are hidden in the clothing. Still others don't give a lot of detail either one way or another, and it's left for us to interpret what's going on with the pieces.
I've been looking at nightgowns that have slits in the front for easy nursing access. I found when I was camping I wanted something to wear while I was sleeping, but also wanted to stay away from elastic if possible (I wanted to give myself a personal challenge, nothing against elastic at all). I found these to be really comfortable to wear, gave me extra warmth while feeding at night, and allowed me to head over to the biff when I needed to. The chemises that had elastic had (for me) too much skin exposed for sleepwear (I have found that I get cold easily now that I'm getting older *LOL*).
I also want to try and make some garb that is not specifically a cotehardie (viking, german ren, possibly?), and see what I can do to make pieces that are going to last past breast-feeding - and/or make patterns to help others who would like to either make their own pieces or alter ones they already have.
There's also the possibility that consignment can be brought in, for gently used garb that is nursing-friendly to be re-sold to new mothers...
As I said, I really appreciate both of you bringing up these questions. It's a great way for me to honestly, seriously think on what to do, how to make it work, and whether it's viable or not.

Re: Period Breastfeeding garb - a question...
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 8:35 AMI'm not going down the baby road again, but I'd have been interested when I did 8+ years ago. Patterns, how to do alterations, or completed garb. I wasn't so much interested how they did it in period, just how to make period clothes work.

Re: Period Breastfeeding garb - a question...
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 6:24 PMWow I wish I could have had this kind of information over the past several years. My youngest is 10 months now and I am not sure how much longer he will be breastfeeding. I do think it would be a useful venture.

Thu, June 5, 2008 - 4:25 PMI don't have any babes, yet, but would LOVE some breastfeeding-friendly garb patterns for when I do.
