So apparently the new McDonald's has a large, rather bright sign that is fairly visible from various parts of Cooper's. If anyone has a mind to, a number of SCAdians have been posting the following at the McDonald's "Contact Us" page located here:
www.mcdonalds.com/contact/c...ct_us.html
There is a new McDonalds at US Route 422 & Currie Rd near Slippery Rock, PA. The sign is so tall as to be visible from the campground 1 mile to the north, where I and 15,000 of my closest friends spend two weeks in July and august at a medieval and renaissance recreation event. While I have no objection to the McDonalds and expect that your location will do a booming business for those two weeks, in addition to the other major events held at the campground, the sign is so tall as to be an eyesore that intrudes on our suspension of disbelief. You would gain a great deal of goodwill with our group, and quite probably a great deal more business, if the sign were to be lowered a bit or turned off after dark so as not to be visible from the campground.

Thu, May 29, 2008 - 8:40 PMYou could probably also specify the dates that the sign would need to be turned off. -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 7:10 PMActually, since it's most likely a franchise, you'd do better finding out who owns that particular location and asking them directly. Corporate HQ would be less likely to be interested in the issue since they are paid by the franchisee.

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 11:54 PMGood luck! If every one who has ever went to pennsic sent a sworn, noterised letter to that food chain that they would never eat there agen if thay don't lower the sign. there responce would be....
"wow we are getting some great press on this one, lets make all the signs this tall, maby ad a cute banner from it ..."
Rember they don't have resatrants they have stores.
they don't sell food they sell product. -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 9:00 AMI'm sure the sign is designed to be seen from I-79, so there's no chance of it being lowered or turned off.
Best to grin and bear it:

Fri, May 30, 2008 - 1:03 PMSomeone should have a McStar worshiper party at pennsic. You could serve mountains of greasy McDonalds food (mana of the God McStar)and cheap beer. McDonalds bag masks and Big Mac box loincloths optional.

Fri, May 30, 2008 - 1:50 PMHehe, yeah, as soon as I heard about the sign a couple months ago I thought to myself, "How could we interpret that? A comet? Ooh, idea!" and then spent a couple hours in Photoshop giggling myself silly. XD -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Sun, June 1, 2008 - 9:27 AMWell really since I stay down the hill, except for one party at night, it won't be in my face as much, but what I really thinking is how many times will someone at o'drunk thirty try to talk me into driving to Mc Slimebags for food. I should be able to ignore it during the day like we do the trucks using engine brakes.

Either that or they'll run screaming like girls right outta town..... -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Sun, June 1, 2008 - 1:06 PMWe should get everyone to go at the same time and just order a small fry with extra cheese. Or see if we can get them to run out of food one day with a concentrated assault. -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Sun, June 1, 2008 - 4:46 PMI like Waian's idea. Honestly, I don't think we should have to put up with anything. But maybe instead of trying to get them to turn it off we can coerce them into transplanting huge pines to block it from the campsite.
By coerce I mean get all the biggest heavy fighters and tuchux to storm in and start demanding meat. And more meat, and meat again. Without saying anything else. -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 9:38 AMBy the way, I second Octavia in doing Waian's idea of all of us coming in at once. But we must realize that McDonalds is a HUGE company that serves billions. It would be like the spartans fighting the persians in 300.
I just got this awsome picture in my head of 4000 heavy fighters and tuchux walking in slow motion toward the door to Mcdonalds.
"THIS IS WHERE WE HOLD THEM! THIS IS WHERE WE FIGHT! WHO WANTS EXTRA KETCHUP!"

Mon, June 2, 2008 - 10:59 AMits either that or just a boycott of that store. I'm sure if word got round at war that people eating there got food poisoning that most would avoid it. -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 11:10 AMC'mon Tommaso, Doesn't the idea of dressing up like a spartan and yelling, "TONIGHT, WE DINE IN MCDONALDS!" appeal to you just a bit.
"Our eyes bear witness to the grotesque side order, coughed forth from the dark corners of the freezer in the back."
"Xerxes is displeased with his clerks. He disciplines them. He gives them a written reprimand."
"....his burger was greasy. His fries were salty. His McChicken had too much mayo."
ok, sorry, I'll stop now. -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 1:50 PMAlthough I am a huge advocate for not wasting food (you wouldn't know it to look at me), I think it would be quite the FU to the McDonald's Corp after everybody giving them warning of the impending overload of business, them stocking themselves to the gills, and not one person going in.
"I don't understand it, Bill. There's like 12,000 people camped down the street and we haven't seen a customer all day. We can't even give this stuff away!"
But if there is going to be a 300 re-inactment, my ass it there!
WE... ARE... SCADIANS!!! -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 4:16 PMUnfortunartly any who have worked McD's or have friends that are owner operators knows food can be shipped in or out of a store overnight they are like the Borg. If we flood them they will adapt and if we boycott they will adapt. Our best option is to ask politely and hope for the best. Most owner operators will do their best to accomidate a large customer base by shutting off the sign if they can and may give a discount to those with a medallion. If it's a corperate store we will probubly get the FU. Just my experance with an O/O in Rochester NY. -

Tue, June 3, 2008 - 4:14 AMCatapult....... why didn't I think of it sooner? Trench buckets have better range but there is no substitute for that "WHACK" sound as a good sized catapult sends a stone down range........ that'll put out a sign....... -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 5:03 AMMcD's care NOTHING about ANYTHING except profit. Period. It is one of the world's largest corporations and didn't get that way by caring about other people's dreams, fantasies or realities.
I like the Scadian invasion idea, but they really don't care about us or anyone. Regardless of Ronald McDonald. & playgrounds. Just profit & they don't need you or me to get it. There's always someone who will buy, somewhere.
We're doomed, so we might as well worship the new star. The ceremony sounds like it has possibilities and most likely won't get us arrested. -

Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 7:26 AMjust suck it up and deal. Pennsic has been getting larger and larger and everyone seems to think that area of PA exists in a vaccuum and that no land or retail development goes on around Coopers lake in the time that we are not there so it invariably ends up being the shock of the western world when people discover (much to a sense of suprise I can find no rational justification for) that in fact the Area around Coopers lake is not sealed away in some weird version of tupperware when we are not there so that all change is forestalled. I hate to break it to you people, but you might think that we represent the sum total of the "make or break" point for the retail establishments in that area....but in fact they still function by the normal models that do not have a special tab in the reports labeled "Pennsic profits", they do not make their business decisions ( the large multinational corporate outfits at any rate) on what will or won't make SCAdians happy at Pennsic. We have had it eal good for far longer than I would ever have imagined possible given the growing push for rural development in PA....it was inevitable that some form or another of civilization encroached on Coopers Lake beyond the point of easily being ignored. That it took this long for something like the big assed sign to appear is a miracle in and of itself.
so suck it up, deal, and all I have to say people is that if one giant McDonalds sign is the make or break point on which a good or bad vacation hinges for you then you really need to redefine how you derivee enjoyment from Pennsic! -
-
Re: Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 2:38 PMYeah, what he said.
And from a swampy perspective- cheeseburgers at drunk-thirty without all the risk of DUI, which are scientifically proven to put a cramp in your pennsic.

Mon, July 28, 2008 - 9:36 AMyah probably not going to see that from the bog.
I think it would have been more suitable if it were White Castle tho! =)
So, is it on OUR side of 79 or the other side? Walking to a MC'D at o drunk thirty would actually be a nice alternative to stocking lunch meat in the cooler =) Dollar menu for the win! -

Mon, July 28, 2008 - 9:42 AMYeah I think we have that big hill...and lots of trees...impeading our view...at least from what I remember.
