Who's going to Autumn War in An Tir? I haven't been to an event in a long time. Except for last chance (an itty bitty event) I haven't been to an SCA event in about four(?) years. I'm thinking of going to AW next month.

out of the Pennsic loop

So, through the grapevine I hear a few things. It has been years since I have been to a SCA Event (due to moving and life events), but still have many friends in SCA and we talk about happenings. One thing that has come to my attention, which I was unaware of (an apologies for being out of the loop), is the state of the chiurgeons at Pennsic. Doing some investigations into the matter I notice there is a new EMS organization controlling the point and has for at least a few years. Digging deeper I notice the Pennsic Budget. Last year $49,200.00 was spent on EMS. Now if we dig further, I notice that we used to pay approximately $19,000-$20,000 (during pennsic 34) for the same services and were like that for many years, so I am told. We are dealing with a $29,000 increase in the matter of a few years. I find it interesting.

Pennsic University Teachers and Students

I am writing on behalf of Mystic Mail. If you aren't familiar with us (and surprisingly many folks aren't) we're the on site place to access the Internet, make copies, send faxes, etc. Sort of a Scadian equivalent of Kinkos.

I wanted to let you know that Mystic Mail is now offering a service to teachers and students alike. For the past couple of years, several University teachers have left their handouts in electronic and/or hard copy form, and we've helped folks get additional copies when there weren't enough to go around. It's convenient because we are on site in the merchant area, and interested parties don't have to leave site. Two years ago, this idea started to catch on and so we wanted to formalize it to make it as easy to service as many folks as possible.

Teachers can upload their handouts at http://www.pennsic.net/mysticmail/Classes.html , walk in with hard copies or (preferably) electronic format during the war. We will keep these around electronically and when students/teachers come to us and ask for a hand out, we'll print it out for them and just charge them for the print out and not the computer time. (Teachers get a copy for free)

Please feel free to casually pass this information on to those who it will help as the war approaches.

Thanks,
Ailis

New Elizabethan era book

I am posting this on behalf of Maggie Secara. I thought it would be of interest to those who are into the Elizabethan era history. Please feel free to forward to other groups or Tribes as appropriate. Thank you.

June 26, 2008 (Los Angeles, CA) Did you know that the first shopping
mall was opened in London in 1571? That in 16th century England, gifts
were given on New Year's Day but not on Christmas? That beer could be
flavored with anything from pepper to lupins? All this and more can be
found in Maggie Secara's A COMPENDIUM OF COMMON KNOWLEDGE 1558-1603
(210 pps, trade paperback, $19.95)

The Compendium website at www.elizabethan.org has long been the go-to
website for authors, students, actors, re-enactors, and Elizabethan
enthusiasts of all kinds. Now in paperback from Popinjay Press, anyone
can have the Compendium on hand wherever they go!

The Compendium, as web fans already know, is a series of snapshots of
daily life in the court and countryside of Shakespeare and Good Queen
Bess, written for the everyday reader. Painstakingly researched and
illustrated from period sources, each page dishes up details about
food, language, games, and gossip, as well as the work, weddings, and
beliefs of more than 400 years ago. There's a detailed index to make
it especially easy to use, plus notes on the sources so you can find
out more. This new paperback version even features a bonus chapter on
persona building that's perfect for guildmasters and authors both.

What can you do with the COMPENDIUM in paperback that you can't do online?
- Make notes in the margins
- Read it in bed
- Take it to workshops
- Stash it in the tourney box
- Write a book report
- Give extra copies as gifts
- And best of all—you can use it even when the computer is down!

Author Maggie Secara is a technical writer by trade, with a Master's
degree from CSU Northridge. She is the author/editor of other Web
publications including the Trial of the Earls of Essex and
Southampton. She has at various times been a Highland gentlewoman, a
Landsknecht campfrau, and the Countess of Southampton, and is
currently editing a 1595 household book.

Fire-pit Courtesy 101

As long as this Tribe is on the subjects of "different strokes for different folks", and granting some gracious slack to those who might play the SCA differently than we do...

In the past, this topic-heading has surfaced on both the "SCA MidEastCulture" and "SCA Harp" Yahoo! groups. Both sides have given good and constructive input. Amid, naturally, letting off some understandable steam and frustration over the usual incidents when people can't play nicely together.

Why am I bringing this up? An incident happened this weekend that really crossed the line — and wow, has it still got me riled. In all fairness, those who precipitated it this time may not have been SCAdians. But often, similar incidents happen...and they ARE.

So the question bears asking:

When you're at an event, the party mood descends, and you begin camp-hopping, what (to you) makes the difference between a friendly invasion, and a hostile takeover?

Do you just see a fire twinkle in the distance and think, "oh look, a fire. Of course they must want <insert pastime of choice>. Let's go hijack it"?

Or do you stop and think, "hmmm....not everyone, everywhere, wants <insert pastime of choice> 24/7. Shoot, maybe they're not even in the mood for visitors. Let's hail the camp and feel them out. If there's a.) entertainment already in progress, or b.) we seem to be generally imposing, we'll go somewhere else."

Bearing in mind, of course, that the ability to make the politer of these two choices varies inversely with how much one's had to drink. :P

Available pavilions before Pennsic from Panther.... (crosspost/Pennsic tribe)

Greetings!

Just called down to West-by-Gawd and got the list of available pavilions in the back shed down yonder just in case someone was desperately seeking canvas... the list is pitifully short - but here it is.

- 20' conical - canvas only, 13 oz. Sunforger flame retardant. Retails for $898 No pole or set-up package. (but could be had for it)

- A custom-sized Traders' Tent. (like a marquee without the sloped ends and a few less poles to deal with) 13'9" x 19'3" Made of 10.38 oz. Sunforger flame retardant canvas. Straight valance, ( the edging around the eaves where one would usually find dagging/scallops ) no braid, just hemmed. 7' walls. It's probably a seam-engineered jobbie. (stronger design) No set-up package, canvas bits only. Retails at $1245. Set-up package could be had for it.

If anyone is interested, feel free to send me a note. Check out my info in the listings for details on how to save $$$'s on either of these or anything else ordered from the Panther peeps in the canvas category. My usual 10% off stuff discount would be applied to either of these tents if ordered through moi. Math on that should be pretty ez for y'all... ;o)

Cheers/Beers/PENNSIC!!

Giant McDonald's sign near Cooper's

So apparently the new McDonald's has a large, rather bright sign that is fairly visible from various parts of Cooper's. If anyone has a mind to, a number of SCAdians have been posting the following at the McDonald's "Contact Us" page located here:

http://www.mcdonalds.com/contact/contact_us.html

There is a new McDonalds at US Route 422 & Currie Rd near Slippery Rock, PA. The sign is so tall as to be visible from the campground 1 mile to the north, where I and 15,000 of my closest friends spend two weeks in July and august at a medieval and renaissance recreation event. While I have no objection to the McDonalds and expect that your location will do a booming business for those two weeks, in addition to the other major events held at the campground, the sign is so tall as to be an eyesore that intrudes on our suspension of disbelief. You would gain a great deal of goodwill with our group, and quite probably a great deal more business, if the sign were to be lowered a bit or turned off after dark so as not to be visible from the campground.

Anyone else talking about the Proposed Changes to Water Bearing by the BoD???

Hot topic on our kingdom list, was just wondering if anyone else was talking about it as well.

>From the President, Patrick Anderson:

Earlier this year, I was asked by several people in the waterbearing
community to examine the various laws of states and countries related to
waterbearing as an organized and official activity of the SCA, Inc.
Various states have informed officers of the SCA, Inc. that while our
activity does not directly violate the food codes or health regulations
of their states, if there were to be an outbreak of illness, the SCA,
Inc. could be held liable for that outbreak. Several health care
professionals and attorneys have reviewed this topic and agree with this
assessment.

I was asked to examine the best way to both ensure a safe fighting
environment for our fighters, and to comply with the various state and
country laws. The relevant laws vary from state by state, county by
county and country by country. I determined that the best way to do this
would be to make “waterbearing” unofficial and unsanctioned by the SCA,
Inc. and proposed this change to the Board. The only other option would
be to regulate waterbearing, and to regulate it such that it follows the
various food safety codes of the various states and countries the SCA
participates in. This would be unwieldy, impractical and expensive for
the SCA to do. Further, it is likely that waterbearers would not be able
to continue to serve our fighters using any of the current methods of
waterbearing.

The proposal put before the membership for comment would stop
waterbearing by any SCA branch or other official group. The SCA would
not have an office of waterbearer at any level. Marshals would still be
permitted to allow waterbearers on the field, but any waterbearing must
not be done by any officially sanctioned or regulated groups of the SCA.
Households are welcome to provide water to fighters, as are unofficial
and unrecognized “guilds”. This does not bar groups from putting out the
"serve yourself water coolers" at events. (In my Kingdom they are
usually the big orange cylinders.)

The Board and Corporate officers understand that many people have spent
time waterbearing within the official framework, and now hope that you
continue to volunteer unofficially. This proposal has been brought to
enable fighters to continue to have a waterbearing service provided to
them, without the extremely strict governance that official waterbearing
will require.

The actual text of the proposed rule is below. This rule has not yet
been approved by the Board, and is being sent out for comment here. The
Directors request comments from the membership regarding this proposed
revision no later than October 1st, 2008. Please send them to:
Corpora Revision
Milpitas CA, 95036
email: comments at sca.org

Thank you for commenting.

Patrick Anderson

Panther "Imperial" pavilion?

My husband and I are considering a big purchase... the Panther Pavilion "Imperial" model pavilion. Unfortunately, there is only one photo of the Imperial available from Panther and we just can't get a good enough feel for the pavilion by that pic. We live down in New Zealand and there are few pavilions here - certainly no other Imperial models.

So, short story long... does anyone here have a Panther "Imperial"? Can you share your thoughts if you do and preferably pictures as well? I can send an email addy for pics if anyone has some, just drop me a message off-list.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone know of a good source for finding a Roman or Greek style horsehair crest for SCA use? Most of the commercially available helmets with plumes would not work for SCA fighting. They would need to be flush to the helmet, and solidly attached.

Does anyone happen to have a medieval recipe (or a link to one) for attar (otto) of roses or for rosewater? I have found some modern recipes on the Web, but would like to see how they compare to the medieval one. I have several roses as tall as my house to experiment with.

Period Breastfeeding garb - a question...

Hi! I've been looking online for a few days now to find information and patterns for breast-feeding friendly garb. I've found some, but have found that no one seems to have either patterns or a merchant who would sell them.

SO - I've been making alterations of my own to garb, and at the last event, I got LOTS of comments from women who wanted to know where I'd gotten them... Now, I am asking the following question to those who may be interested:

If either easy-to-use patterns or pre-sewn garments were available for purchase, that were nursing-friendly, would you be interested in purchasing them?

Depending on the response, I'm seriously considering making both and offering them for sale through the SCA...

Thanks for any feedback!

Aaaannyhoo, I have the lack of funding to get any serious garb for my friend... *I've noticed that trying to find men's garb is quite the challenge, while finding things that will work for female garb isn't quite as hard*

Any suggestions on where I could look around mundy Seattle area?

X-post: Leatherworking??

Over the weekend while helping my mom clean out her basement, I was lucky enough to come into contact with about 2+ yards of lucious black bootleather! My mom originally bought it to make SCA boots but since she no longer plays, she didn't have any use for it. So I claimed it! *scurries off with leather under her arm* My idea is to make a short v-necked sleeveless vest (as I'm a bellydancer) and something like a matching belt with part of it.

Only one problem...I know NOTHING about leatherworking. I know that you need special materials, needles, threads, leather punches etc. but I have no idea how to actually work the leather or where to even get the tools and materials. I think I will probably need to line it with something unless I want to always wear it over some sort of choli or crop top but other than that...I'm clueless! Any of you lovely leather ladies (or gentlemen) out there want to help me out??

A Law for a Thing

Greetings,
Next month we are holding an event that has a Norse style "Thing" as the main event/activity. The heads of households, Baron/ess, other important people (of course any royalty in attendance) can participate in offering up a proposed law that will be voted on by the attendants of the Thing. The law should be Norse in style, but relevant to todays SCA game that we all play.
I am looking for references to actual Norse laws, or ideas for laws, or examples of laws that have been brought forth in recent Things that people might be aware of.

Anybody?

vintage_silk_wraps on Ebay

This is a store on ebay for Buyer BE WEAR
I was bidding on a lot of 6 skirts in which I was winning with a wonderful price so I thought. After the bidding got to $100, the seller put a BUY NOW price in the site so anyone that was bidding and wanted the lot of 6 for $89.00 could purchase it cheaper but the highest bidder was locked into paying the higher price. I paid ASAP and contacted the seller - ask if he would not make up the difference with sending extra wraps - just told me "TO BAD not he fault the bidding got so high"
So I left them a natural comment - and explain the change in auction after price was over $100. In return they give me a negative comment and misleading information my comments. I contacting him asking why the negative when all I did was be a great buyer by over paying within 10 min of the auction ending and only asking for him to balance the wrong doing on his part. Again "TOO BAD" "YOUR FAULT"

online archive of Scotland's Parliamentary activities 13th - 18th cent.

Published Date: 11 May 2008 By Jeremy Watson

FUEL shortages dog the country and MSPs face scandals over expenses and falling standards.
Tolls over the Firth of Forth are a major issue and worries over health, education and the environment get a constant airing. Money concerns beset the electorate and politicians are urged to act. Excessive intake of alcohol is a rising cause for concern.

Welcome to the Scottish Parliament – hundreds of years ago.

The first ever complete online archive of Scotland's Parliamentary activities between the 13th and 18th centuries will be published this week and it reveals that little has changed in the nation's affairs over the past 300 years. A small army of researchers, led by Keith Brown, professor of Scottish history at St Andrews University, has spent the past 11 years turning 16.5 million words covering meetings, minutes and legislative acts discussed by the old Scottish parliaments into an easily-accessible online archive.

They found that Mary, Queen of Scots was so concerned about the kind of fuel shortages that threatened Scotland's economy just two weeks ago that in 1563 she outlawed the export of coal.

To reduce the physical risk of injury when heated debates broke out in the Parliamentary chamber, the only weapon that MSPs were allowed to take into the building was a sword, the documents record.

To curb excessive drinking, those found in public houses after 10pm could be subjected to corporal punishment or fined, according to a 1617 law.

The £1m project was sanctioned by the then Conservative Secretary of State for Scotland, Michael Forsyth, as one of his last acts in office, with the aim of producing a new version of the obsolete 19th century printed edition of pre-Union Parliamentary proceedings in Scotland.

The work, The Records of the Parliaments of Scotland, which will be launched by deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon this week, provides a fascinating glimpse of life in Scotland and also shows that many of the issues concerning the 2008 Holyrood Government are not exclusive to the 21st century.

Brown said: "Arguably, human nature doesn't change that much and neither do institutions. The make up of the chamber may have been very different, with all wealthy men, no women and no ethnic minorities, but many of the preoccupations were not that much different to those of today."

Scholars attempted a similar exercise in the 19th century in a project that produced a series of bound volumes between 1814 and 1875. But the new version has added records of meetings in a missing 60-year stretch in the 16th century as well as Parliamentary and committee minutes not previously published.

Brown said: "When you think the last version took more than half a century and ours 11 years then we didn't do badly but, of course, they did not have access to modern technology."

There were hurdles to overcome, including translating documents from Latin, French and Old Scots to modern English and running out of funds.

"We started under the Conservatives, got more support from Labour and finished the work under the Scottish National Party," Brown said. "That shows what all-round support there has been for a project that will help students and the public to understand our nation for many years to come."

PARLIAMENTARY STANDARDS

Debates in Parliament could often become heated, as opposing parties engaged in arguments and squabbles that would be familiar to today's MSPs. In response to what was thought to be a decline in standards, Parliament passed a series of acts setting out appropriate behaviour. One article decreed that the only weapons allowed within the chamber were to be members' swords. To curb verbal personal attacks, and for "eschewing of contest and hate", speakers were ordered to direct their comments to be members' swords. To president of Parliament or lord chancellor (equivalent to today's Presiding Officer or Speaker) rather than individual members.

TRANSPORT

The state of the highways was a constant concern, given these were vital for trade and general travelling throughout the country. In 1669, the repair of the country's roads was contracted out to parishioners themselves, who were to meet after church on Sunday suitably equipped with picks and shovels. Each parishioner was to work on the roads no more than six days per year, always outwith sowing and harvest time when manual labour was at a premium.

HEALTH

DISEASE was often rampant in Scotland's major towns. Plague was the most feared, and Parliament itself was forced in 1645 to decant to St Andrews because of an outbreak in its traditional home of Edinburgh.

Bo'ness was effectively locked down in 1645 due to the danger of the disease spreading beyond its bounds, and any infected person who attempted to leave was ordered to be shot and killed.

Basic environmental health legislation was passed by Parliament to stop the spread of disease.

Edinburgh was described as "a puddle of filth and filthiness" in 1621 due to candle-makers openly burning their tallow and "corrupting the air" and by butchers disposing of refuse in the public highway.

ALCOHOL ABUSE

Excessive drinkers and "haunters of taverns" were legislated against by a series of 17th century acts. Those found in public houses after 10pm were to be subject to corporal punishment or imprisonment.

CRIME

Parliament had important judicial functions, especially before the Court of Session was founded in 1532.

The gathered estates could pronounce judgment on the most minor cases of theft right up to treason, for which it had particular responsibility.

It was a court like the House of Lords today and corporal punishment was often favoured, even for seemingly trifling transgressions.

Blasphemers, for example, could face a spell in the stocks or the 'jougs' – a hinged collar attached to the neck and chained to a post, often situated in a busy public thoroughfare for maximum humiliation. The wearing of sackcloth was also ordered in 1695 as a public display of penitence for those who transgressed strict church laws. Beggars, especially, could face particularly harsh punishment if they were found wandering unlawfully from parish to parish.

The penalty for those apprehended included that their "ears be nailed to the tron or to another tree and their ears cut off and banished from the country".

EDUCATION

THE first education act, which was passed in 1496, allowed the sons of wealthy landowners to be educated from the age of eight. The quality of teachers was addressed in 1567, with each to be assessed for competence by the Kirk. In the mid-17th century, parliament legislated for the founding of a school in every parish, with parishioners supplying the cost of the schoolhouse and the teacher's salary. A primitive kind of PTA/school board was to be set up to ensure that this was done.

CREDIT CRUNCH

Monetary worries afflicted 16th-century consumers as much as those of today. In the late 16th century, Parliament acted to limit the interest on the lending of money to 10%, since "exorbitant and immoderate interest" had been "the cause of the ruin and decay of many".

Profiting at a rate higher than this was decreed to be an actual sin "not tolerable in a reformed and Christian commonwealth".

ENVIRONMENT

Environmental concerns were frequently addressed by parliament, even if the impetus behind such acts was preserving species for hunting and food. Many acts were made forbidding destruction of habitats, including burning of moorland, felling of young trees and cropping of broom. Legislation was also passed against the poaching of rabbits, bees and their hives, pigeons and fish from others' land.

FUEL SHORTAGES

An act passed by parliament in the reign of Mary Queen of Scots (1563) records a "most exorbitant dearth and scantness of fuel" within Scotland, because coal was commonly used in empty ships for ballast. The act outlawed any export of coal beyond that to be used for fire in the ship's voyage. It was, however, ineffectual. In 1609, James VI reissued the earlier act passed in his mother's reign, stating that through excessive exports coal had risen to "an extraordinary dearth and price and by all appearance the whole coal within this kingdom shall in a very short time be wanted and consumed, to the great hurt and prejudice of the whole estate".

PARLIAMENTARY EXPENSES

Parliamentary representatives prior to 1707 were, like their equivalent today, entitled to claim expenses for any outlay incurred while attending a session.

An act of 1428 ordered commissioners' expenses to be paid by the shires that sent them. The cost of ceremonial dress (specifically foot-mantles of velvet, a kind of long cloak worn while mounted on horseback) for the riding of Parliament procession was also to be met by constituents.

In 1633, after complaints that constituents weren't paying up because they were unsure of a reasonable amount, the Scottish privy council ordered that, for the forthcoming Parliament, each commissioner should have a lump sum of 300 merks, the equivalent of £16.67, roughly £2,170 in today's money, for general expenses.

A NEW PARLIAMENT

Before the early 17th century, Parliament traditionally met in the Old Tolbooth, which stood near the north-west corner of Parliament Square in Edinburgh. But the increase in numbers called out for a purpose-built venue, and in 1632 Charles I ordered the city to build a new chamber. Similar to its modern counterpart, this Parliament House (located near St Giles' Cathedral) was over-budget and behind schedule when it held its first meeting in 1639.

TOLLS OVER RIVERS FORTH AND TAY

The issue of tolls over the rivers Forth and Tay was controversial, although it was rates for ferries rather than bridges that parliament investigated. Profiteering was a problem even in the 15th century. An act of James III (1474) decreed the individual personal fare could be no more than two pennies for people and six pennies for animals.

A later act of Mary Queen of Scots (1552) stated that the excessive tolls imposed by the ferrymen of Queensferry, Kinghorn and Dundee were a 'great and heavy oppression' on the country. Tolls were therefore to be reduced.

The full article contains 1684 words and appears in Scotland On Sunday newspaper.

Crosspost--Sephardic Jewish garb

My household sister is exploring a new persona that celebrates her Sephardic Jewish heritage. She is quite taken by some of the textiles used by Yemeni Jewish women, and would like to incoporate some of that. Right now, the persona idea is that she is from a family that originally lived in Yemen but moved to the Ottoman Empire has its Jewish communities flourished after the 1492 Dispora.

I know that Sephardic Jews usually wore what other people in the area wore, but I have no idea what that is! Does anyone know of resources for info on clothing from the Ottoman Empire and Yemen from the 16th Century? I'm afraid we haven't got the timeframe narrowed down any further than that right now.

Thanks.

I'm making a blue linen bliaut with multicolored trim at the neck and biceps. I only had enough trim to do that much, and now I'm trying to
figure out the best material to make the ceinture or belt out of. Should I use a length of a different wide trim, or make it from a solid fabric, or something else? Any trim I use won't match the trim that I've used on the bliaut itself, but the idea of a solid color belt doesn't really seem right to me. Or am I off base on that?

Any opinions or suggestions? I'm kind of in a time crunch, by the way. Ideally, I'd like to wear this bliaut to my Barony's Revel this Wednesday, and also take it to Baron Wars in early May.

SCA Board to to expand scope?

Having received a number of letters requesting consideration, the Board of Directors would like to solicit opinions regarding a motion to expand the scope of the SCA to include all of Asia and the "New World", and extend the time period to include classical pirates. Given the number of SCA participants already doing research and personas in these areas, it seems that there is enough of an interest for this motion to be seriously considered.

Mid-East Clothing Merchant

I have been pondering opening a VERY period mid-east store for a couple of years. I am talking only silk or cotton, but still affordable.
There are a few quasi period places that are more tribaly than period.

Is there a market for men and women's wear? Or would I just stick myself in debt?

I am thinking a wide array of colors, side laced for custom fitting. Mostly solid colors, some patterns when I can get them, but they would definitely be more expensive. I am talking only silk or cotton, but still affordable. I would do flat felled seams until I got my serger. Or inside-out/french seams, whatever they're called. Cloth buttons.

It would definitely be of a better quality. Probably not quite as accurate as historic enterprises, but close and of that wuality, and about that many clothing choices.

Is there a market?

Hello, Im in Illinois, looking for one or two people who would like to ride share to pennsic this year. Im leaving on July 25th or 26th, depends on my work schedule and riders availability and will be returning on August 10th LATE / August 11th Early. If anyone is in or around the area you can reach me here or at pennsic37rideshare@hausadelbrecht.org to discuss plans. I have a 4 door Lincoln Town Car and a Trailer. I do have alot of stuff, so the ideal candidate(s) would be transporting light mundane gear, not full period kit. Lets discuss and make plans, shall we?

Panther Regent Pavilion For Sale

I think I am officially done playing! I see no more SCA camping in my future, so I think it's time for my once-used pavilion to find a new loving home. It is the Panther Primitives Regent Pavilion 12x12 size with canopy fly and groundcloth included, as well as poles, ropes and stakes. It is flame retardant canvas and trimmed in black- I think the scallops are George Washington style (check all the details out at www.pantherprimitives.com), but I could be mistaken, I'll check and see when I get a response to this. The fly is scalloped and black trimmed to match.
You'd have to be near enough to come pick this up, and with it you can take my slat bed and air mattress, and whatever other SCA camping odds and ends have been collecting in my garage. $1000 for the whole shebang. Message me if you're interested!

Touring the Tower

A tour group stopped at the Tower of London, and were given the chance to try out some of the ancient armour. Two men - one from Prague and another from Athens took up the opportunity. One donned a slightly damaged suit of plate armor and the other chain-mail, while the rest of the group crowded around. But in the full suits, the onlookers couldn't tell one from the other. "Is that the Czech wearing the plate armour?" asked one tourist. "No," replied another, "The Greek has the broken plate, and the Czech is in the mail."

Roman Rollers

Back in the days of the Roman Empire, the famous Emperor Nero instituted a new game. The players would take those little disks you set your glass on in order to protect the furniture, and see who could get the most distance rolling them across the floor. They were the first roller coasters. Back in those days, the disks were made of iron, and they would bet on whose disk would roll the farthest. They called them ferrous wheels.

The Angry King

Once, long ago, a king summoned all his provincial rulers to his castle. He was in a rather belligerent mood, and wanted to scare them into giving him extra taxes. Unknown to him, they met in secret on the way, and decided that they should agree to pay the extra, but they would at first pretend to refuse, so they could try to bargain down the actual amount extra they would have to pay.

They arrived at the king's castle, and gathered in the audience chamber. The king made his demands, and as agreed, they started to refuse. Unfortunately, they hadn't realized just how belligerent the king's mood was: as soon as they started to refuse, he got angry, and ordered his guards to kill them on the spot.

More than half of them were slain before they even realized what was happening, and the others had to do some very quick groveling to survive. After everything had settled down, those who remained explained to the king their plan, and the king was filled with remorse for his hasty actions.

The moral of the story?
- Don't hatchet your counts before they chicken.

The King's Pizza

One day (just before Christmas, probably), Good King Wenceslas decided that he was fed up with the food at the palace, so he phoned up his local Italian restaurant for a takeaway pizza. "Certainly, your Majesty" says the Manager, "Would you like your usual"? "Yes please," replied the King, "same as always - deep pan, crisp and even"

Happy April Fools Day!

Arabic Classes

I have a couple of friends who are interested in learning Arabic from me. I've made some announcements to different people and am now making an offer to those interested on this and some other lists. Feel free to pass around the information but I'm going to start soon and if I get a floodgate of interested people (so many that I can't handle it) then I'll limit it to a class size that I can handle. Now for some details.

I plan to make this class pretty slow paced. I know that learning Arabic can be challenging and most people have school, work, and other pursuits that take time. I understand this and don't want people to be overly inconvenienced. The idea it to teach some basic Arabic to those interested, but unable to attend a normal class. I don't know how long the class will be. It may go for quite awhile, as I teach more and more to interested students. I plan on using email to teach the lessons, most likely Outlook. People will have to install Arabic onto their computers (which comes with most operating systems. I'll send out instructions on how to do this via one of the first emails and I know others who have already installed it. There will be homework, but again, I understand that people are busy, so I won't make it too much. I plan to send out lessons every week or so. I work in a war zone, so please be understanding if I am sometimes late with a lesson or feedback. Also understand that this will be basic Arabic. Simple words and phrases will be the things I teach. I will eventually teach more advanced things, but a mastery of the basics are necessary.

What can you do with Arabic?? Lots of things. You'll be able to have simple conversations and use Arabic at SCA events if interested. Taught Arabic a few times at Collegium and there seems to be some interest. Nothing complicated, but it adds a neat twist to the atmosphere. The Arabic I plan to teach is MSA. This is the proper Arabic that is used in almost all official situations. There are too many dialects to teach them all, but with a basis of MSA, you may find it easier to learn whatever dialects you like.

People who are interested or who have questions should contact me at: jimmy@nqh1.com or failing this at marlztone@yahoo.com. I will also look at this post for any replies.

I need to give her a specific name/contact info, preferably of someone who can lead her through her first few events, help her with garb, introduce her around, etc.

I wonder if it's the bagpipes? It couldn't be the big drum! Personally I blame the biniou koz! ;-) Teribus had a great time playing at Pennsic last year even if it was only for a few days. The concert with Istanpitta was great fun. Our trip out to Estrella last year was also fantastic. For those who might not have heard Teribus, here's an mp3 link: http://www.legionofdoumbek.com/audio/teribus_bagadsuite.mp3

Would anyone be interested in classes on the medieval great pipes (playing them or making them)? I will be teaching my drum classes as usual but thought it would be good fun to convince Richard and EJ to share their vast knowledge of the pipes.

Indian/Middle Eastern/Tribal Outfits (X posted)

I have two complete outfits(tunic and pants) that need to find new homes. I personally never worn them (meant for my smaller sister but she decided she didn't want to get into dancing or the SCA after I bought them) but they did come from India so who knows. They are clean and come from a smoke free home.

The first one if beautiful burgundy, gold, and black set with gorgeous bands of embroidery at the neck and two plackets of embroidery at the waist. There is gold piping at neck and sleeve opening as well as gold stitching at bottom of sleeve. Comes with burgundy chalwar(pants) with filigree stitching at ankle opening.

The second is a lovely red, white, and gold batik with a front yoke with extensive trim work. Very much an Afghani nomad style of tunic. The sleeves also have a trimmed cuff at the opening and are poofy in this style. The bottom of the tunic has a trimmed band along the bottom to match the yoke on the front. This outfit comes with matching chalwar(pants) as well, which are made of the fabric and with the same trim detailing as the tunic.

Both outfits are made of an easy to care for and comfortable cotton. Great for warmer weather especially events like Pennsic.

I am asking $125 + $15 for shipping and packaging for each but am willing to take offers.

Here are the measurements for each:

Burgundy Batik Set-
~Tunic~
Sleeve Length: 13"
Bicep: 16"
Sleeve Opening: 12"
Bust: up to 36"(at 36" it will be tight)
Waist: about same as bust measurement--some pleating at waist front so could fit larger waist
Shoulder to hem(Length): 38"
~Pant~
Waist: up to 44"
Length: 40"
Ankle: 11"
Waist to crotch: 17"

Red, White, and Gold Batik Set-
~Tunic~
Sleeve Length: 15"
Bicep: 24" (sleeve meant to be poofy)
Sleeve Opening: 10 1/2"
Bust: up to 36" (will be tight at 36")
Waist: about same as bust but could fit larger waist depending on shoulder to waist measurent(waist could fall where the pleated shirt is)
Shoulder to Hem(Length): 32"
~Pant~
Waist: up to 48"
Length: 35"
Ankle: 10"
Waist to crotch: 13"

Either message me here or privately if you are interested.

Thank you,

Greetings,

This year our household is going to take part in the Land Grab at Pennsic 37. As we all know the larger the group the better chance you have of getting a decent piece of land. From our house we currently have 22 people all set to pre-reg. I am looking for another group / household that would like to join camping forces to increase our numbers. If your interested please let me know. We have a household camp manual that I will send to you so that you know what to expect from us.

Thank you,
Custom Panther Pavilion for Sale - Period Marquee

Panther Primitives Marquee Rectangular Pavilion w/ COMPLETE setup package

Used as early as the Renaissance Period and still a popular design today, the marquee is appropriate for virtually all historical eras of re-enacting from Medieval through the American Fur Trade.

- 22ft x 27ft without ropes, 25ft x 30ft with ropes - BIG Tent! Custom job. AWESOME Pavilion!
- Canvas is white 13oz Flame Retardant Sunforger canvas. Toughest canvas on the market! Roof has purple trim on the Chivalry style dags/scallops and brass peak grommets.
- Room Divider - Make it like a mullet. Business up front, party in the back! Split your tent into a business AND sleeping area in style. Or have 2 rooms for whatever you desire. - Divider comes with a built-in door. Can be tied closed for privacy or open for full disclosure.
- Wooden Poles - All in excellent shape. 2 center upright poles and the ridge pole with steel sleeves for adjustment, in addition to the poles all around the perimeter.
- Ropes with Wooden Sliders + EXTRA
- Wrought Iron Stakes + EXTRA
- Canvas ground cloth with tarp sewn into the bottom. DELUXE version. When used with the sod flap, completely keeps the moisture and bugs out.
- 6ft high walls - with sod flap attached to the bottom of the walls to keep the rain and dirt out. Walls wrap around for full enclosure. Really nice for keeping cold rain and gusts out. - Ties all around the walls for easy tying to the poles to keep your walls firmly in place.
- Double stitched seams and pole holes every 3 feet.
- "Seam Engineered" seams - Here's what the Panther site says about that: This is also called “Skeletal Framework Design”, and what it means is that your pole positions (grommets or loops) are placed at every seam instead of at measured intervals around the tent’s perimeter. Benefits: All your roof seams will automatically line up with your wall seams, so your tent has a more symmetrical look. Also, because your poles are closer together, and because they are all lined up with your seams you can get a more rigid set up on a large tent such as a marquee. All of your support poles are about 33” apart from each other on this style of tent and only full width panels of canvas are used.

This tent has only seen ONE season and is in FANTASTIC shape! It was absolutely fabulous for keeping us cool when it was hot and keeping out the chill when it was windy. I am really loath to sell this tent because I love it so much. It is just too big for our current needs. When it was purchased we needed something rather large, so we had Panther custom make it for us, and boy we're we IMPRESSED! What an awesome tent! Full deluxe package with almost all the bells and whistles as you can see above. Original purchase price was $5500.

I wish I had some full sized pictures of the tent, but I've included some examples of the Panther marquee tent. Also, in the tent1.jpg and tent2.jpg pictures, you can see the divider in the back. What you see is only ONE THIRD of the entire tent. This thing is BIG!
IMAGES:
http://www.bigdaddygypsy.com/bigdaddygypsy/images/tent/

Go in with your fighting company or unit to get this tent and make your headquarters/party central. With the divider you can have a commander's room and a grunts room. Use it to expand your business (we got comments every event on how nice it was, hooray for bragging rights!) and hold more stock while sleeping in comfort knowing your stock is safe just a tent wall divider away. Or just buy it and look SWANKY at your events. Perfect tax refund purchase!

Buy this almost new, HUGE, spectacular, custom tent off me for only $3997 plus shipping.

Email is daddytristan@gmail.com for any questions. Thanks!
Glastonbury Folding Chairs?

I am thinking of manufacturing a Glastonbury type folding chair to sell at SCA events. I have posted a photo of a pressure treated pine prototype. The production version will be similar, but will have slightly wider legs and 1 1/4 inch diameter wooden dowels in place of the iron tubes. I'll likely make them in pine, oak, and maple. The production version will likely sell for $150 each. Is there anyone out there who would be interested in purchasing such chairs? I am not taking orders, just running an informal marketing survey.

Hello all,
I've been reading a lot about the period when Vikings started settling in Ireland and the people known as the gall-gael. Working on a persona for someone born in that period. Viking father/Irish mother maybe? What kinds of suggestions/historical sources are there on this subject?
Thanks!

Cleveland Armor Exhibit

Witness the art of Renaissance warfare as CMA presents Arms and Armor from Imperial Austria
Released Dec 13, 2007

CLEVELAND (December 7, 2007) — The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) presents a varied selection of some of the finest surviving examples of European arms and armor with the arrival of Arms and Armor from Imperial Austria on view February 24, 2008 – June 1, 2008 at CMA. This exhibition is the Museum’s first to look at a slice of history in Europe at the height of the Renaissance through the subject of arms and armor and its role in a rural society on the border of the Ottoman Empire.

Arms and Armor from Imperial Austria, curated by CMA’s curator of medieval art, Stephen N. Fliegel, focuses upon the history of the Austrian state of Styria between 1500 and 1650 when it was under threat from the advancing Ottoman Turks. At the heart of the story is a broad selection of loans from the collection of the Landeszeughaus (regional armory) in Graz, the capital of Styria. This armory, still intact, was one of a series of armories established by the early Habsburg Family in the 16th century throughout Central Europe for defensive purposes against the Turkish expansion. At its height, the armory housed 180,000 pieces; today it contains 30,000 pieces including some of the finest surviving examples of arms and armor in Europe. The exhibition, presenting more than 200 works, will additionally examine the role of arms and armor in a historical context, both as highly-decorated art objects, and as functional weaponry or protection for its wearer. Other aspects of the history of the period explored are warfare, tournaments, and armor as fashion.

Question about kingdoms

Ok So after a 2 year break I have decided to get back in to the SCA. I have never been an official member. Here is my question. We are USMC and stationed in Okinawa japan (TINY LITTLE ISLAND) (for 2 more years) The canton of battle rock is a dormant section of the kingdom of the west. My options are to become a member of the west, even though the closet active group is a 2 hour flight and 6 hour boat ride away. We will most likely NEVER go there. My mother is in AZ which is atenvelt. We visit often and this is where I have participated the most. Well my husband would like to fight at home when we are visiting, He needs the marshal from our kingdom to clear him to fight, and at this point we are kingdomless. What are your suggestions? Should I become a far away member of Atenvelt, or a member of an nonexsistant section of the west? HELP!

No, really. MEET them. Don't just type in a few Google-searches, watch George A. Romero's "Knightriders" and make up the rest.

Had you done so, some facts might have inadvertently sunk in. And perhaps, you'd have saved yourself from typing up a libelous screed like this:

http://www.amazines.com/Christian/article_detail.cfm/353839?articleid=353839

FWIW: the BOD in Lochac have been made aware of this article. So has the Baron of Innilgard, which is this guy's local group. He respectfully requests that if anyone leaves comments on the article, that they be polite — i.e., no trolling.

(Whereas well-thought-out ,10,000-word rebuttals that take apart his "exposé" bullet-point by bullet-point? Would probably be worth neither the time nor the carpal tunnel, actually. But if you're home sick with like, pneumonia, and time is weighing heavily on your hands? Knock yourself out.)

St. Brides-- Army of Dalkieth Invites all those interested in the real living history of the Renaissance time period to attend the premier Northern California Event.......

Action in the Low Countries------ The School of the Renaissance Soldier. April 4-6th
At Gibson Ranch State Park in Sacramento CA

This event last year had a battle contingent of 141 persons.....

We are expecting this number to double this year.......

At What event can you experience a Renaissance style Battle with over 200 soldier wielding pike----- holding off 30 cavalry--- Black powder matchlocks blazing and Cannons booming?

This event is becoming the ultimate destination as Re-enactment Soldiers from all over the Nation are coming to attend and participate in this annual spectacular event.......

Persons who consider themselves Military oriented should heavily consider attending this Workshop in order to knock the dust off their boots and prepare for the up coming season....
whore tax

Hi, I'm staying with a bunch of Lanschects at Estrella who decided they were fed up with extraneous women in camp so they instituted a tax on all non-relationship or useless women in their camp. (Ok, the *women* of the unit demanded the imposition of a tax.) I'm not useless but I'm nobody's chattal / bedwarmer either so I've decided to pay my own damn tax. (Elsewise they tax the friend who invited me.)

Now I've got 6 weeks to come up with something stunning for the unit. I sew. I cook. I live 800 miles from any of them. Any suggestions?
An Unfortunate Death On The Battlefield

I copied the following from the MySpace SCA group. Elsewhere I learned that the deceased fighter apparently died of a heart attack due to some sort of undiagnosed preexisting condition. He was fairly young and outwardly in good health. After all these years Bersark has been proved right.
>
This is a repost from our Starkhafn Group, done so with permission
from Mistress Margaret. I would ask that if you are interested in
lending a hand or in lending a shoulder, please take a moment to read
this.

I thank you for your time.

Tearlach
Starkhafn, CAID

Sad greeting to the tribe,
As you are already aware, Starkhafn lost one of
its own on Friday, Feb 15, at Estrella. Albert
Vernon leaves behind a wife, Kindra and young
son, Cody.

Many of our kind SCA brethren have asked for
contact information regarding condolences and/or
donations and I wanted to pass along the
information.

An email address has been set up for anyone who
wanted to send along condolences electronically.
Messages can be sent to
albertvernon_memoriam AT yahoo.com
and they will be printed and passed on to his
family.

Snail mail can be addressed to his wife, Kindra
Vernon, in
c/o Julie Stackable
13 Cook Circle
Las Vegas, NV 89115
Anything sent will be passed on to the family.

If anyone feels so inclined as to make a donation
to help out his family with final expenses,
checks or money orders can be made payable to:
Kindra Vernon and sent to the above address.

Because we are a far-flung family, a PayPal
account has been set up in his memory, bank
account transfers can be made to the same email
address
albertvernon_memoriam AT yahoo.com
As a caveat, if a donation is made via PayPal,
please make it ONLY as a bank account transfer,
as credit card payments incur a fee to the
recipient.

Again, any monies sent as a private donation are
going directly to his family, with their deep
appreciation.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please
feel free to contact me off list. I apologize if
this sounds too businesslike, I wanted to make
sure the information was passed along succinctly.
Please feel free to forward as you feel
appropriate, I will be passing it along onto a
number of lists.

Naturally, any of you attending the service this
weekend can pass along condolences personally to
the family, but we wanted to put out a central
contact point for the many who have asked,
especially as I know not just Starkhafners
subscribe to this list.

With heavy heart,
Mistress Margaret Hepburn of Ardrossan

Hi there,
Are there any ladies who both dance and do heavy fighting? Courtly dance or Orientale dance, either one. I have a few questions that I would like to ask directly but I need to find such people first. :-)

Thank you very much.

Known World Players auditions for "Medea" (x-posted)

The Known World Players announces auditions for this year's Pennsic
performance of Euripides' "Medea". Rehearsals take place in the
afternoons at Pennsic War 37 with our performance the final Friday
evening of War Week.

Auditions will be held at the following events:

Midrealm:
Masque of Courtly Love (February 23). Event website:
http://alderford.org/events/masque2008
Royal University of the Midrealm (March 29). Event website:
http://midrealm.org/greyhope/events/RUM/index.htm

East Kingdom:
Noisemakers Schola III (February 23). Event website:
http://www.eastkingdom.org/event-detail.html?eid=1522

There is no monologue required to audition, however, if you would like
to prepare one that is fine. Auditions will consist of scene readings.
All roles are open.

FAQ:
*What are the Known World Players?
We are a troupe of actors who perform period plays in a period fashion
at the Pennsic War. This will be our 8th year in existence.

*Who do I talk to for more information?
You can contact the founding director, THL Tyzes Sofia (called Zsof) at
zsofsky@gmail.com, or for questions about the East Kingdom auditions
contact Master Lorcan Dracontius at lorcan@dracontius.net.

*I'm worried about the time commitment at Pennsic. Can you tell me more
about the rehearsals?
We rehearse every afternoon from the middle Sunday of Pennsic through
our performance the final Friday of Pennsic. The larger the role, the
more time required at rehearsals. If you would still like to perform but
with a smaller role, please let us know. A large role will require your
presence at every rehearsal.

*I can't make the auditions, but still want to be a part, how can I do this?
We are more than willing to do auditions over the phone, or set up time
at an event either one of us will be at. If you can't make an audition,
please don't let that stop you from contacting us.

*Do you have a website?
Sure! Head on over to http://www.karolinekramer.com/kwplayers

Have any other questions? Feel free to contact Zsof.

My seventeen year old daughter has many fond memories of the renaissance dress I made for her for halloween some years back and has become intrigued by some of the costuming research I've been doing. She's now picked some fairly generic garb patterns out and wants me to sew her some garb so she can come along to faire and participate as well. We'll end up being very different in our garb and persona I'm sure since I'm headed down a Middle Eastern path and she is drawn more toward European garb, but how cool is it that she's interested in participating with me?

Are there any SCA calligraphers with a tribe?

I looked around a bit, and all I can seem to find are tribes for kanji. Although I'd like learning more about it, I'm really looking for other "scribes" and or illuminists who do things for our group specifically. Like award scrolls and AS pieces.

Anyone out there?

Return of the "Black Gryphon Inn" (EK)

http://www.settmourswamp.eastkingdom.org/gryph-meetings.html

BGI is a tavern-event traditionally held by the Canton of Gryphonwald (Barony of Settmour Swamp, East Kingdom.)

Due to size restrictions on the site, it tends to be a small event, but is usually very atmospheric and fun. Some past years' themes have included BGI being set in:

- a tavern of the Rus
- a Viking meadhall
- a Japanese teahouse
- a pirate ship
- a Roman thermopolium in frontier Britain.

Usually it's in mid-February (coinciding with the "Wicked Winter Faire"), but the site we've been using for the last few years burned to the ground shortly after Pennsic. 8o That threw off the planning process somewhat, as there was a bit of a scramble to find a suitable (read: "one with a stocked wet-bar") replacement locale.

So, albeit a couple of months later in the calendar than usual, we are go! Don't forget to make your reservations early.

tribes.tribe.net/burningsca

Yeah, I know. ANOTHER Tribe. I seem to collect them. Looking around, I saw there was a RenFaire Burners Tribe, but none for those of us in the SCA world, so what the hell.

If you Burn AND do the SCA, or if you would just LIKE to do one while in the other, join us. I figure it will be a good way for SCA folks to find each other on the Playa and for SCA folks who have never been to Burning Man to find out more about it and exchange tips, etc.
